Continuing education unit (CEU) is the standard unit of individual participation in all noncredit continuing education programs offered by the School of Continuing Education. Each course is assigned some CEUs before being added to the Educational Management Information System (EMIS).
One CEU is defined as ten contact hours of participation in an approved and organized continuing education experience under responsible sponsorship, capable of direction and qualified instruction. When appropriate, a decimal part of a CEU may be awarded. One contact hour is equivalent to 60 minutes of clock hour interaction between the learner and the class instructor, whether in a classroom, laboratory, or a learning experience designed outside the traditional boundaries of an SCE learning facility. CEUs are not expressed past the tenth place, (1.78 CEU = 1.8 CEU).
The School of Continuing Education (SCE) at The American University in Cairo (AUC) was the first school in Egypt to be fully accredited by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET). The continuous partnership with IACET demonstrates SCE's commitment to lifelong learning and the continuous refinement of standards for all SCE offerings. IACET is the only standard-setting organization approved by the American National Standards Institute for continuing education and training (ANSI) to offer IACET CEUs.
IACET accreditation requires compliance with rigorous standards, including continuing education and training organization, responsibility and control, learning environment and support systems, learning event planning, learning outcomes, planning, and instructional personnel, content and instructional methods, assessment of learning outcomes, a system for awarding CEUs and maintaining learner records, and program evaluation.
Like credits awarded by any university globally and transferred to another, any institution has the right to accept or reject CEUs. If a participant is interested in finding out whether a particular institution or university will accept CEUs completed at SCE, the student should correspond directly to check if a particular body accepts IACET CEUs before taking a particular training course.

This includes information on occupations, skills, career pathways, trends in the labor market, and training programs to meet these goals. Scheduled certificates/diplomas and programs at SCE have structured subjects. Students are free to select the course for which they wish to register as long as it does not have a prerequisite.
To access the course description of any course in the scheduled programs, click here. Select the certificate you are interested in and click on any course title to access the course description updated online.
The University does not provide any transportation except for students enrolled in programs at AUC New Cairo, for an extra fee. For more information on the service routes available and bus schedule, click here.
Learners are always encouraged to begin course registration as of two weeks from the beginning date of the current term until one day before the coming term for face to face classes and until the announced registration deadline two days before the term begins for online courses. During that period learners will benefit from a larger selection of course sections and subjects that suit their personal needs and schedules and will benefit from requesting a refund in case they wish to drop a course. Continuing learners should not wait until the results of their current term courses are announced as they will forfeit the above advantages. Learners delaying their registration until the first day of classes or the online registration deadline will forfeit all of the above advantages and will not be able to receive any course refund for courses dropped once the due date has elapsed.
Before the term begins and during the first week of classes according to class availability, students may transfer to another class in consultation with the department if the student wishes to. Students are notified by email and SMS to the mobile recorded on the student information system if any course is canceled. As such it is essential that students regularly check their email.
Full payment of registration fees is required at the time of registration. No individual learners or learners sponsored by third-party organizations, who have outstanding financial obligations to SCE, are allowed to attend classes on the first day of the term without settling the full payment of the tuition fees unless authorized by SCE finance office.
Learners may withdraw from a course until the sixth week of a 12-week term, the third week in a six-week term or nine days in a three-week term, provided they notify the Admission office. No withdrawals are allowed after that deadline. A grade of W will be recorded on the student transcript, and no other course may be added in its place. Learners who withdraw will forfeit all rights to a refund of any portion of the tuition fees. Failure to attend classes does not constitute a formal withdrawal from an SCE course. A grade of S will be recorded for students who stop attending after the deadline of the sixth week of classes or fail to notify the SES office during the withdrawal period.
To withdraw, learners must email [email protected] and submit their smart ID if previously issued.
It depends on two factors: the number of courses per certificate, and the number of courses that a student registers in, and passes, per term. For example, if the certificate contains 10 courses and the student registers in five courses per term and passes them all successfully, then the certificate can be finished in two terms.
Students registered in regular English courses or conversation courses receive their free copy of the certificates at the end of each stage and not at the end of each level of study. For other areas of study, upon completion of the requirements of the course or program in which the student is registered, the student can request their first free copy of the certificate or transcripts as follows:
- Email the SCE IT support
- Call 16723 from 9 am - 4 pm on weekdays, except on national holidays
- Visit the SCE offices at AUC Tahrir Square or AUC New Cairo

All SCE learners have the right to report instructors’ disciplinary actions related to equal opportunities and University policies concerning racial, sexual, ethnic or religious nondiscrimination. The petition/grievance is found at the department and is submitted to the relevant program manager using the form (Form B11-1 September 14).
Departments handle students’ petitions/grievances within five working days of the receipt of the form. Learners are notified in writing by the department of the action taken. A learner may seek resolution at higher administrative levels if the matter is not resolved or if she or he is dissatisfied. All cases are handled with discretion, protecting the learners’ best interests. Anonymous petitions/grievances are disregarded.
SCE aims to operate an effective and fair procedure for dealing promptly and courteously with any complaints or feedback. Feel free to send an email and rest assured that all complaints are handled confidentially when needed and will be forwarded to the corresponding unit. You will receive a reply within two working days.
