Testing for Admission, Readmission, Placement and Replacement

All new scheduled program applicants must sit for one or more tests to determine their language proficiency level or competency in a specific subject before being accepted as School of Continuing Education (SCE) learners.

 

To apply for the English language courses, all prospective learners must sit for the Standardized English Proficiency Test (SEPT).

To apply for oral communication English language courses, all prospective learners must sit for the Oral SEPT (OSEPT).

To apply for studies other than English language courses, learners must sit for SEPT and they may be required to sit for further entrance tests as demonstrated in the next table. In case Department Directors (DDs) would like to make any changes in the below admission/placement language proficiency cut-off scores/courses, they must consult the Evaluation, Testing and Assessment Department (ETAD) Director to determine an alternate cut-off score.

Two Admission Tests:

1- Standardized English Proficiency Test (SEPT)
[Validity of score: 6 months]

1. English course ENGGB2A or passing ENGGB1D

Applicants who score ENGGB1C or passing ENGGB1B should take and pass the English for Translators course (SLET101)

2. Arabic Proficiency Test (APT)
[Validity of score: 3 years]
2. A pass grade (Exempted from the Arabic Grammar Course, “Pass”)
Applicants who did not pass (“Fail”) the APT should take and pass the Arabic Grammar course (ARBF101) to be able to register for any translation certificate.
2. Simultaneous Interpreting Oral SEPT
[Validity of score: 6
months]
  • Oral Communication course SCMM B2 1 or passing SCMM B1 3
  • Applicants who score SCMM B1 2 or passing SCMM B1 1 should take and pass the English for Interpreters course (SLEI 101) to be able to register for the diploma.

1. Professional Certified Trainer (PCT) Certificate SEPT English course ENGGB2A (Passing ENGGB1D does NOT in itself qualify learners to apply for PCT)
2. Fundamentals of English Language Teaching (FELT) SEPT  English course ENGGB2A. (Passing ENGGB1D does NOT in itself qualify learners to apply for FELT)
3. Professional Diploma in English Language Teaching (ELT) SEPT English course ENGGB2A if the FELT has been completed since a year or more and there is no proof of practicing English language teaching during this period
4. FELT for Young Learners (FELT-YL) SEPT English course ENGGB1C (Passing ENGGB1B does NOT in itself qualify learners to apply for FELT-YL)
5. Career Certificate in Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language (CCTAFL)

One or Two Tests: 

1- Proficiency Test in Modern Standard Arabic (PTMSA)
[Validity of score: 1 year]

2- For Foreigners only, Proficiency Test in Spoken Arabic of Cairo (PTSAC)

  • Placement in the appropriate oral communication courses is based on the OSEPT score.
  • English language continuing learners must pass ENGGA1D course or higher to enroll in oral communication courses. 


For language customized/tailor-made programs, applicants sit for one or more tests to determine their language proficiency or competency in a specific subject as specified in the proposal.

*Any continuing learner who would like to apply for oral communication courses must take OSEPT except English language continuing learners.

 

The School of Continuing Education reserves the right to modify admission test cut off scores in response to developments in the market or in the discipline concerned.

In some cases, applicants are exempted from SEPT as follows:

  • Graduate or undergraduate learners of AUC or any other English medium university abroad
  • AUC full-time or part-time faculty
  • SCE English language faculty members. Language Department should provide ETAD with the documentation demonstrating the faculty member's proficiency in English.
  • Holders of a valid International English language test score, such as IELTS and/or TOEFL

In the cases above, the Exemption from the Standardized English Proficiency Test (SEPT) form (FormG1-1March16), showing ETAD’s approval on the exemption case should be used.

Learners who wish to re-take any of SCE admission/placement tests may re-take the test after a minimum period of one month.

Learners who studied English language courses at SCE and wish to be promoted to a higher English language course or demoted to a lower one must retake SEPT. Also, learners who studied oral communication courses at SCE and wish to be promoted to a higher course or demoted to a lower one must retake OSEPT.

Learners who were registered in any AUC continuing education certificate and did not attend any classes for a six-month period or more, calculated from the end date of the last term they attended, and wish to resume their studies must apply for re-admission (cf C7) and take all entrance exams once again in the first term following the six-month or calculated period. However, learners who completed a Foundation certificate or AUC continuing education certificate are required to sit for the SEPT if they dropped out for a period of one year or more from the date of completing the certificate.

In cases, where AUC schools who have valid Memorandum of Agreement (MOU) with SCE wants to enroll learners without abiding to testing policies in their own programs, an email must be sent from the approved representative to SEM Executive Director.
